Russell: That happens a lot! Gold's frequency jumps all over the place depending on its size. Metal detectors locate gold around the "pull tab" frequency. Silver's and platinum's frequencies are higher with platinum in the lead. I actually hit a silver reading, but dug up an intact beer can two days ago. So it goes both ways.

But, wow! A platinum ring? Not bad at all. Congrats!

John: Thanks! I'm glad people are getting curious about metal detecting. Gold grows in veins up in the mountains and under certain situations can get washed out into the rivers and streams that flow down from that mountain. Pretty cool stuff. Gold's over $1000 an ounce right now, so even if you just find a small nugget, that can be quite a chunk of change.

Good luck to both of you and happy hunting!

Woah, this is some seriously good information! I actually got curious about finding gold from some infomercials I saw a while back about panning for gold. But, just like you said, there is some serious gold to be found elsewhere than a river! Thanks man, looking to reading more great posts!

It's funny, I was beachcombing one day with my metal detector, and I got different readings from the ones I normally get (usually when I find discarded aluminum cans, or some pieces of steel). Lo and behold, I manage to dig out a wedding band someone lost. Turns out it was platinum, too.
